Ethics and Ethical Standards for Nurses and Midwives
Course DescriptionEthics and Ethical Standards for Nurses and Midwives is a CPD course for practitioners in Australia who want to strengthen ethical awareness, accountability, and professionalism in their practice. It is especially relevant for those facing AHPRA or Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) notifications, remediation requirements, or fitness to practise processes, but also valuable for nurses and midwives seeking CPD to embed ethical standards into daily care.
The course explores the foundations of nursing and midwifery ethics, including autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, confidentiality, and cultural safety. Participants will review the NMBA Code of Conduct and Decision-Making Framework, learning how to apply these to real-world challenges such as consent, boundaries, open disclosure, and culturally safe practice.
Common ethical breaches — including confidentiality lapses, inappropriate relationships, and failure to obtain valid consent — are examined alongside their regulatory consequences. Through reflection, case-based learning, and practical strategies, participants will gain the skills to manage ethical dilemmas, respond constructively to complaints, and demonstrate insight, reflection, and remediation. By the end of this course, nurses and midwives will be equipped to uphold public trust, maintain fitness to practise, and deliver care that is consistently safe, ethical, and patient-centred.
