Ethics and Ethical Standards for Doctors
Course DescriptionEthics and Ethical Standards for Doctors is a CPD course for medical practitioners in Australia who want to strengthen ethical awareness, accountability, and professional standards in their practice. It is especially relevant for those facing AHPRA or Medical Board of Australia notifications, remediation requirements, or fitness to practise processes, but also valuable for doctors seeking CPD to embed ethical conduct into daily medical care.
The course explores the foundations of medical ethics, including autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, confidentiality, and cultural safety. Participants will review Good Medical Practice: A Code of Conduct for Doctors in Australia and learn how to apply ethical principles to real-world challenges such as informed consent, communication, professional boundaries, documentation, and open disclosure.
Common breaches — including inappropriate prescribing, confidentiality lapses, cultural insensitivity, and misleading advertising — are examined alongside their professional and regulatory consequences. Through case-based learning, reflective tools, and practical strategies, participants will develop the skills to navigate complex ethical dilemmas, respond constructively to complaints, and demonstrate insight, reflection, and remediation.
By the end of this course, doctors will be equipped to uphold trust, meet regulator expectations, and practise in a way that is consistently safe, ethical, and patient-centred.
