Ethics and Ethical Standards for Nurses and Midwives

Course Description

Ethics and Ethical Standards for Nurses and Midwives (Ireland) is a CPD course designed to help nurses and midwives understand, apply, and demonstrate ethical practice in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics.

The NMBI Code places patient welfare, dignity, and trust at the centre of practice. It requires nurses and midwives to act with honesty, fairness, probity, and accountability in all professional contexts. Ethical responsibilities cover informed consent, confidentiality, advocacy, professional boundaries, communication, and digital professionalism.

This course explores the four ethical principles — autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice — alongside NMBI expectations. Through regulator-aligned guidance and real-world Irish case studies, learners will develop practical strategies for embedding ethics into daily care and demonstrating accountability in remediation or fitness-to-practise contexts.
