Ethics and Ethical Standards for Dentists and Dental Professionals
Course DescriptionEthics and Ethical Standards for Dentists and Dental Professionals (Ireland) is a CPD course designed to help dentists and dental practitioners understand, apply, and demonstrate ethical practice in line with the Dental Council of Ireland’s Code of Practice: Professional Behaviour and Ethical Conduct.
The Dental Council’s Code requires honesty, probity, accountability, and respect in all patient interactions. Ethical responsibilities cover areas such as consent, confidentiality, record-keeping, professional boundaries, candour, and digital professionalism. Dentists must balance patient autonomy with beneficence, avoid conflicts of interest, and uphold public trust in a profession where reputation is critical.
This course explores the four ethical principles — autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice — alongside the Dental Council’s expectations. Through regulator-aligned guidance and Irish case examples, participants will develop practical strategies to navigate ethical dilemmas, sustain professionalism, and demonstrate accountability in fitness-to-practise or remediation contexts.
