& Support / Psychologists — Ontario / Remediation and Reflection for Ontario Psychologists

Ontario · College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario

Remediation and Reflection for Ontario Psychologists

9 min readLast updated July 15, 2026

Remediation is not punishment, and it is not an admission that you are a bad psychologist. It is the evidence — to the College and to yourself — that whatever went wrong has been understood and addressed. What the ICRC is really assessing is insight. That is the thing worth getting right.

Engage early and genuinely. A SCERP or an undertaking is an opportunity to demonstrate insight, not a hoop to clear. Approach remediation as something you are doing for your practice, document your reflection as you go, and avoid the box-ticking that panels see through immediately. No course guarantees an outcome, but genuine, evidenced remediation is what reassures the College.

What “remediation” means at the CPBAO

Remediation is the College’s way of managing risk without necessarily resorting to discipline. In practice it takes a few recognisable forms: a Specified Continuing Education or Remediation Program (a SCERP) ordered by the ICRC; an undertaking you agree to, committing you to specific steps or restrictions; or terms, conditions and limitations placed on your certificate of registration. Each is designed to address an identified risk — in record-keeping, consent, boundaries, communication or ethics — and each expects you to do something, not merely to promise it.

Insight is the thing being assessed

When an ICRC panel weighs how to dispose of a file, and when it later judges whether remediation has worked, the question underneath is always the same: does this member understand what went wrong and why, and is that understanding likely to change what they do? That is insight. It is different from remorse. A psychologist can be genuinely sorry and still lack insight if they cannot articulate the mechanism of the failure or the system change that prevents its recurrence. Conversely, real insight can be unglamorous: a clear-eyed account of what happened, what it cost, and what is now different.

Defensiveness is the enemy of insight. Minimising, blaming the client, or treating the complaint as purely a communication misunderstanding all read as an absence of insight — and that, more than the original issue, is what pushes a file toward a more serious outcome.

SCERPs and undertakings — and the public record

A SCERP and an undertaking are the two most common formal remediation routes. Both are recorded on your profile on the College’s Public Register, alongside cautions and discipline referrals. That transparency is a feature, not a bug: it is part of how the College demonstrates public accountability. It also means the way you complete a SCERP or honour an undertaking matters — visibly finishing what you agreed to, on time and in full, is itself evidence of the insight the College was looking for.

Reflective practice as evidence

A reflective statement is often the most useful document you will produce. A strong one does four things: it describes what happened factually and without spin; it analyses why it happened, including the conditions and habits that allowed it; it sets out specifically what you have changed; and it explains how you will know the change is holding. Vague assurances that you will “be more careful” carry no weight. A statement that names the standard engaged, the concrete step taken, and the safeguard now in place carries a great deal.

Preventing recurrence — systems, not just intentions

Insight that lives only in good intentions tends not to survive a busy caseload. Durable remediation is built into your systems: a consent process you follow every time rather than when you remember; a records routine that produces contemporaneous, complete notes as a matter of course; explicit boundary practices; and, where relevant, proper supervision arrangements. The test is whether the same circumstances could produce the same failure again. If the honest answer is yes, the remediation is not finished.

Rebuilding trust with the College and the public

Remediation is ultimately about restoring trust — the College’s trust that you can practise safely, and the public’s trust that the profession holds itself to account. That is rebuilt through demonstrated change over time, not through a single document. Completing remediation fully, maintaining the new practices, and being able to show them if asked again is how a member moves past a complaint rather than being defined by it.

What the record shows afterwards

Because SCERPs, undertakings, cautions and discipline outcomes are published on the Public Register, part of moving forward is understanding what remains visible and for how long, and being ready to discuss it constructively if it comes up — with an employer, an insurer, or in a future registration context. Handled well, an evidenced remediation is not a permanent shadow; it is a documented instance of a professional who took a concern seriously and did something about it.

Key takeaways

Remediation manages risk and evidences change — it is not, in itself, a punishment.

What the ICRC assesses is insight: understanding what went wrong, why, and what is now different.

SCERPs and undertakings are the common formal routes and both appear on the Public Register.

A strong reflective statement names the standard engaged, the concrete change made, and the safeguard now in place.

Durable remediation is built into systems — consent, records, boundaries, supervision — not just intentions.

No course guarantees an outcome, but genuine, evidenced remediation is what rebuilds the College’s trust.

Related courses

Remediation for Fitness to PractiseStructured remediation that evidences addressed risk after a complaint or undertaking.View course →
Reflection for Fitness to PractiseWriting a reflective statement that demonstrates genuine insight rather than box-ticking.View course →
Insight for Fitness to PractiseDeveloping and evidencing the insight the ICRC is actually assessing.View course →
Ensuring No Repeat of a Mistake in Future PracticeTurning reflection into concrete safeguards so the same issue cannot recur.View course →

How to respond to a CPBAO complaint
What happens during a CPBAO investigation?

Frequently asked questions

<details>
Is a SCERP a punishment?

No. A Specified Continuing Education or Remediation Program is a remedial measure aimed at addressing an identified risk — for example in record-keeping, consent or boundaries.
