\u2014 and its limits, and the records that support it, are unusually exacting. The Psychology Board&#8217;s <em>Code of conduct<\/em> (section 3.3) treats privacy and confidentiality as fundamental, and requires informed consent about how information is handled \u2014 including the <strong>limits of confidentiality<\/strong>, how information is recorded, stored and used, and the nature and purpose of any disclosure. You must also comply with the Australian Privacy Principles.<\/p>\r\n\r\n    <h2>Explaining the limits at the outset<\/h2>\r\n    <p>Confidentiality is not absolute. At the start of the professional relationship \u2014 and again as circumstances change \u2014 explain when you may need to disclose information, for example where there is a serious risk to the client or others, where the law requires it, or in mandatory reporting. Clients should understand these limits <em>before<\/em> they disclose, not after.<\/p>\r\n    <aside class=\"note\"><p>&#8220;Ongoing consent&#8221; is a theme of the current Code: consent given at intake should be revisited as the work, the parties involved, or the risk picture change.<\/p><\/aside>\r\n\r\n    <h2>Third parties, families and supervision<\/h2>\r\n    <p>Working with couples, families or groups raises the question of <em>who the client is<\/em> and how information is managed between parties \u2014 agree this explicitly and record it.
