The two are linked: reflection is the process, and insight is the understanding it produces.<\/p>\r\n      <h2>Reflection and your CPD<\/h2>\r\n      <p>Good Medical Practice expects doctors to keep their knowledge and skills up to date and to evaluate their practice. Since 2024, the Medical Board requires every doctor to be part of a CPD home and to complete a minimum of 50 hours of CPD each year, built around a Professional Development Plan and spread across three areas:<\/p>\r\n      <ul>\r\n        <li>educational activities (at least 12.5 hours);<\/li>\r\n        <li>reviewing performance and measuring outcomes (at least 25 hours combined); and<\/li>\r\n        <li>CPD that also addresses culturally safe practice, health inequities, professionalism and ethics.<\/li>\r\n      <\/ul>\r\n      <p>Reflective activities \u2014 peer review, clinical audit, significant-event analysis and multi-source feedback \u2014 sit largely within reviewing performance and measuring outcomes. In other words, structured reflection is not an optional extra; it is built into the CPD every doctor must complete.<\/p>\r\n      <aside class=\"note\"><p>Reflection is not separate from clinical work. It is how a busy doctor turns everyday cases, complaints and near-misses into safer future practice.<\/p><\/aside>\r\n      <h2>How to write a meaningful reflection<\/h2>\r\n      <ol>\r\n        <li>Describe the event briefly and factually.<\/li>\r\n        <li>Explain your thinking and reasoning at the time.<\/li>\r\n        <li>Identify honestly what went well and what did not.<\/li>\r\n        <li>Consider the impact on the patient and others.<\/li>\r\n        <li>Set out what you have learned and what you will change.<\/li>\r\n        <li>Note how you will embed that change and review whether it worked.<\/li>\r\n      <\/ol>\r\n      <p>Keep it specific and honest, and avoid generic statements. A short, candid reflection is worth far more than a long, defensive one.<\/p>\r\n      <h2>Insight when a concern arises<\/h2>\r\n      <p>If you face a notification, regulators look hard for genuine insight and remediation: do you understand what happened and why it mattered, and what have you changed to prevent it happening again? Demonstrated insight \u2014 supported by concrete remediation such as targeted CPD, supervision, audit or changes to your systems \u2014 is often the single most influential part of a response.
